Re: Geocities to close down ;( - Questions

As one of the letterboxers affected by this, I have been weighing my options ever since I heard about this. I could find a new free web hosting site and copy all my clues over to it, but the same thing
might happen in the future and I would have to copy them again. Or, if I'm no longer around, the clues would just disappear and there would be many hundreds of my orphaned letterboxes out there. Therefore, I have decided that I will copy my clues to LBNA where they will (hopefully) last a long, long time. Since LBNA accepts HTML tags, I should be able to keep most of my clues the way they are, minus the pictures. It will be a lot of work, but I will only have to do it once. I probably will still create a new website for my letterboxing links, photos and other information, probably at Webs: http://www.webs.com/

I have a couple of questions of the webmasters though. What will happen to all the clues currently on Geocities owned by letterboxers no longer participating, and does LBNA have enough space to handle all the clues currently in Geocities? Not sure if it would be feasible to copy old clues to a new basement or something before the end of the year, and not sure how to identify non-participants, but it would be a shame to lose all those clues.

Thanks,
Silver Eagle

I plan to find another free site to move my stuff to, but I first have to
finish moving the two other websites I run off Geocities.

You can keep your stuff on Geocities if you want to upgrade to a paid site.

Thanks, Silver Eagle, for trusting LbNA to host your clues. I'll email you off list too, but I'm sure we could accomodate your pictures as well as the text and html tags.

I agree it would be a shame to loose clues from inactive boxers on geocities the way we did on aol-hometown last year. Let me talk with Choi about this: it would be easy for him to list the clues currently on geocities. Maybe we could mount a national campaign to contact placers and/or adopt and repost clues onto letterboxing.org.

Anyone interested in getting involved in a project like that?

Hey, thanks! We are going to call this the "Geocities Garage," a place to park letterbox clues for geocities users both active and inactive. I'll have more for everyone on the effort next week.

Some people may remember the work that went in to the Letterbox Basement lo' these many years ago.

I remember, Jay.
Your efforts are to be commended.
All of you webmasters of LBNA work seemlessly and behind the scenes in more ways that the general public realize.
Thanks to all of you for your combined efforts!!!

I'd be willing to help in any way which would be helpful. Maybe by taking on a state or so in my area?

Only stop by here rarely. AQ mail best bet.

We are faced with a similar dilemma for our higher quality clues. Fortunately, our ISP does provide free hosting, but if we plan to leave them there may be yet another migration. Still, it has been fun learning how to use firefox's free FTP protocol.
